How To Stop Nervous Chatter At Job Interviews
We all have our something we do when we are nervous. We over use hand motions, we don't look people in the eye or we talk to fast or too much. I tend to talk to fast. As if I just gotta say it all in one breath before I lose my chance to say it all. The problem with this is that the person trying to listen is hit by a wall of words coming at him or her at 90 mph.
Do you often feel like you say too much or say it to fast in an interview?
Here are some suggestions to slow yourself down or just remind yourself not to throw a Santa size bag of information at your listener. The trick is practice, practice, practice.
Practice - It may not be tomorrow but you will have an interview. Don't wait until they invite you to an interview to start practicing. Go through a practice interview situation in your mind and pay close attention. Figure out where you start to pick up speed. This may be best done with a partner who can pin point where you are speeding up.
After you know your speed point practice staying at a friendly communicative level. Practice saying what you want to say at the right speed. If you practice you will do a better job at your next interview.
Make a list - A lot of employers will use standard questions so get a list of potential questions you may be asked and practice the answers. Some interviewers like to ask questions of their own. But nevertheless they are questions to assess if you are a good fit for the company. Make a list of potential questions and practice saying the answers.
Research the company - The more background information you have about a potential company the better prepared you will be to answer questions. If you know the company you are interviewing for you can more easily tell an interviewer why your perfect for the open position. Also, you will be better equipped to be part of a conversation instead of a Q & A confining situation.
Recognize your red flags - Spend more time on potential questions that make you more nervous. Highlight interview questions and or topics that may make you share more than you'd like to. Whether it is good or bad too much information can drown an interviewer in information overload. This is definitely one of my own bad little habits. To combat this I make a list of three power phrases that best describe my attributes and I remember to keep myself to those three attributes.
Tell me about something your not good at. My least favorite question of all. I hate to show negative and always try to turn a negative into a positive. This question is a trap to see how you answer. Be prepared for it and have a good answer. If you don't prepare you may find yourself tumbling into the abyss of information overload at 90 mph
