Founded in 1907, the University of Redlands is a private liberal arts & sciences college located in Redlands, California, on the outskirts of the Greater Los Angeles area.

Originally affiliated with the Baptist Church, the university is now formally independent, although it has still has an informal relationship with American Baptist Churches USA. The mission of the university is to provide a "personalized education that encourages students to make enlightened choices." The school encourages a pluralistic notion of values by challenging assumptions & stereotypes in both classes & activities.

The University of Redlands offers more than 50 programs (on the undergraduate & graduate levels) in four schools: College of Arts & Sciences, School of Business, School of Music & School of Education, including an MBA program. The school emphasizes academic rigor, curricular diversity, & innovative teaching. Redlands also has a school called the Johnston Center for Integrative Studies, which operates as an alternative education program based on the philosophy that students take ownership of their education by crafting classes & majors to fit their needs & interests. Students in the Johnson school create their own degree through a graduation contract, change the content within courses they take, create new courses, & receive written evaluations in lieu of grades. Johnson currently has some 200 students, who live together in the Johnson Complex as well as attend classes.  The Complex prides itself on the "intentional community" created by the students there.

At its heart a liberal arts college, the University of Redlands places an emphasis on developing the whole student.

The University of Redlands is accredited by the Western Association of Schools & Colleges. It is also accredited in certain fields, including from the American Chemical Society (ACS), American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA), Council on Academic Accreditation in Audiology & Speech-Language Pathology, National Association of Schools of Music (NASM).
